Born in Monterrey,
Nuevo León, on November 13, 1871 and died in California on November 8, 1946. He
studied at the famous San Carlos Academy and under the direct supervision of
the 19th century teacher Santiago Rebull at the National School of Fine Arts in
Mexico City DF. Later, in the first decade of the 20th century, he traveled to
Paris where he found influences from the avant-garde European schools of the
moment. It was here that he learned about Impressionism, Post-Impressionism and
Symbolism, which were a hallmark of his work years later. Ramos Martínez played
an important role in the history of art in Mexico, founding the Escuela de
Pintura al Aire Libre, where other artists of great importance, such as
Fernando Leal, were students. This institution was a radical response to the
extreme academic tendency of the Academy of San Carlos as well as the assimilation
of European artistic culture where the easel was brought to natural scenes in
order to reflect the essence of light, color and the way it is in
impressionism. Having gained fame on both sides of the Atlantic, Ramos Martínez
left Mexico to reside in Los Angeles, California, in order to provide his
daughter Maria with the medical care he needed after suffering from a bone
disease that left him disabled. He frequently exhibited and painted murals such
as his monumental work at Scripps College.
