Pallasites are a rare type of ironstone meteorite, which got its name from the first such known meteorite, found in Siberia and transported to St. Petersburg in 1772 at the behest of the German naturalist Peter-Simon Pallas. Palasites consist of approximately equal amounts of nickel-containing iron and olivine. It is believed that the peculiar structure of pallasites is caused by the fact that they were formed in the absence of gravitational forces or with negligible gravitational forces.
